Manual vs automated temperature monitoring

Compare manual temperature logging with automated sensor monitoring: reading frequency, alerts, nights and weekends, audit records and what each one costs.

Updated

In many operations, temperature is still checked with a thermometer and a log sheet. It works while someone measures and writes it down, but it leaves gaps exactly when the information matters most. This guide compares both methods so you can decide when to automate.

How manual logging works

A person reads each unit’s thermometer at set times, for example at opening and closing, and writes the value on a paper sheet or in Excel. If a reading is out of range, the same person should raise the alarm and record what they did.

  • Hours can pass without information between one reading and the next.
  • Nights and weekends usually go unrecorded.
  • A writing mistake or a lost sheet leaves a gap in the history.
  • Nobody gets an alert: the problem is found on the next round.

How automated monitoring works

A wireless sensor is installed in each cold room, refrigerator or room and sends a reading every 10 minutes to a platform such as Xpit Connect. The record is stored automatically and, if a value stays outside the range you set, the owner receives an alert on WhatsApp, Slack or email.

  • Continuous readings, including nights and weekends.
  • Alerts as it happens, without waiting for the next round.
  • Complete history you can export by unit and date.

When automation pays off

Manual logging can be enough with one or two units and someone always on site. Automation pays off when:

  • You have several units, cold rooms or sites to check.
  • The product you store is expensive or spoils quickly if refrigeration fails.
  • You are inspected or audited and need complete records.
  • A unit has already failed at night or over a weekend without anyone noticing.

What it costs and how to start

With Xpit Connect, equipment and installation start from 18 UF + VAT per site as a one-time payment, and the platform from 2 UF + VAT per site per month, with minimum billing of 4.5 UF + VAT per client per month. A single-site project is typically operational in about 2 weeks, and you can start with an optional pilot of up to 4 weeks.

FAQ

Your questions, answered

Does automated monitoring replace the log sheet?

The system stores each unit’s temperature record automatically, so you no longer write it by hand. Your team still sets the ranges, responds to alerts and records the corrective actions your procedure requires.

Do I need to replace my refrigeration equipment?

No. Sensors are installed on the equipment you already have. Most are wireless, so installation is quick and non-invasive for your operation.

Ready to stop writing temperatures by hand?

Leave us your details and schedule a conversation with our team. We will help you define which equipment to monitor and how to receive alerts.
